Thickness measurement (UT) of asphalt silos at Colas

In this case, we explore how, at Colas Denmark, we conducted visual inspection (VT) and ultrasonic thickness measurement (UT) of their asphalt silos at two of their plants using our Elios 3 drone.

Key points from the case:

Fast and safe inspection of silos without the need for scaffolding or lifts

Interactive 3D models and Excel data for a complete overview

Improved insight into wear patterns and development of future models

Background of the case:

Colas operates several asphalt plants in Denmark, where the silos are exposed to heavy wear and tear on a daily basis. The cones, in particular, are known to wear out quickly as they are subjected to the greatest pressure and stress. Traditionally, inspecting these areas requires either scaffolding or lifts and access to confined and potentially hazardous spaces.

Our solution with the Elios 3:

With our Elios 3 drone, we were able to inspect both plants in just two days and deliver a complete data foundation. The drone made it possible to carry out both visual inspections of surfaces, components, and welds, as well as ultrasonic thickness measurements of the critical areas that are otherwise difficult to access.

We deliver the results in two formats:
✅ Excel report containing all measurements organized per silo.
✅ 3D model of the plants, allowing customers to easily access and visualize the measurements interactively.

This method completely eliminated the need for manual inspections in confined spaces, thereby reducing time, costs, and occupational safety risks.

Results and insights:

The inspection provided Colas with entirely new insights into the wear levels of their silos. They could clearly observe patterns showing how cylindrical and rectangular silos wear differently.

In addition, we are now working on developing wear models that allow us to correlate data from multiple inspections with the amount of asphalt that has passed through the silos. This enables us to begin predicting when a silo should be repaired or replaced. An important tool for planned preventive maintenance.

Conclusion:

Through the drone inspection, Colas gained a fast, safe, and data-driven solution that saves both time and money while eliminating the need to send employees into confined and hazardous spaces. At the same time, they obtained a solid foundation for understanding wear patterns and planning maintenance in a more precise and predictable way.

For Colas, this means they can optimize their maintenance strategy and ensure more stable operations across their plants throughout the country.
